Scientific Community
The City of San Antonio states that our city is anchored by four major industries: health care/biomedical, tourism, the military and agri-business. We are proud of our city’s status in the scientific industry and believe it is a major reason many people decide to live here.
San Antonio is fortunate to have the South Texas Medical Center (STMC) that includes medical, dental and nursing schools, twelve hospitals, five specialty institutions, and several other medically related institutions. The STMC is located on over 600 acres, employs over 25,000 people, has an estimated 12,000 volunteers and serves 4.5 million patients a year.
Among the learning centers in San Antonio is the University of Texas Health Science Center. It serves an area comprised of 50,000 square miles and has more than 3,000 students a year with over 100 affiliated clinics, hospitals, and health-care facilities. The following programs are offered at UTHSC and its affiliates: Dental School, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Medical School, School of Allied Health Sciences, School of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, and School of Public Health.
The Brooke Army Medical Center is located in San Antonio and often receives burn victims from around the world. Although their specialty is burn treatment, they also specialize in bone marrow transplants, trauma, neurosurgery, cardio thoracic surgery, and oncology.Weather
The mean temperatures, as recorded by weather.com, range from 49 in January, to 69 in April, 85 in July and August, and 60 in November. With over 300 sunny days per year, our average temperature is 70 degrees and temperatures are only below freezing about 20 days a year.
Education
San Antonio has a dozen colleges and universities. They all have recognized specialties, such as, medicine, law, art, nursing, and education. We have over 100 private schools for the children of our city.
The greater San Antonio area has 19 school districts that serve almost 237,000 students. Near BioNumerik is the Northside Independent School District (NISD), which is the 5th largest school district in the state and the largest district in San Antonio. There are eight (8) Texas Exemplary Schools in this district and about thirty (30) Texas Recognized Schools in this district. Also in the NISD are three magnet schools specializing in Health Careers, Business Careers, and Communications/Arts Careers. Another district near our office is the Northeast Independent School District (NEISD) which last year had seventeen (17) Exemplary Schools and 21 Recognized Schools in its domain. San Antonio is ranked as one of the top tourist sites in the nation. With over 1.14 million citizens, San Antonio is a city of diverse culture and one of the major tourist sites in the United States. There is something for everyone here. San Antonio has the history of the Alamo and the other missions built in the 1700’s, scores of specialty stores, hotels, restaurants and clubs located on the Riverwalk, and several art museums and a world-class zoo with over 3,500 animals. We are also lucky to have Fiesta Texas Theme Park, Sea World of Texas, and some natural wonders near us.
Water lovers will be glad they live in San Antonio, as we have several large lakes nearby where people regularly enjoy skiing, boating, scuba diving and picnics. We are only 150 miles to the coast of Corpus Christi and about 250 miles from Galveston.
San Antonio loves to celebrate its diversity. Annual events include a 10-day celebration called Fiesta, which has been an annual event for over 100 years. It is a multi-cultural, family-oriented, citywide celebration. It includes events such as Night in Old San Antonio, the Oyster Bake, the Battle of Flowers Parade, and the Texas Cavaliers’ River Parade. Another famous annual event is the Texas Folklife Festival, which lasts four days each year and celebrates over 40 different cultures with food, music, drink and dancing. With over 300 sunny days per year, there are ample opportunities to enjoy one of over 30 golf courses in the San Antonio area. The Dominion Country Club has been the home of the annual Senior PGA Tour’s SBC Championship at The Dominion tournament for the last 15 years, but in 2002 it moved to Oak Hills Country Club. Our City was the first to host the Texas Open at the Brackenridge Park Golf Course in 1922. The Resort Course at Westin La Cantera hosts the Texas Open, now called the Valero Texas Open.
